Types of Freight Container Shipping
Shipping containers come in two standard sizes, 20 feet and 40 feet, reflecting the Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) metric used in intermodal freight transport. Intermodal freight is any cargo moved by more than one transportation system. Intermodal freight transport describes the ability to transfer cargo between shipping modalities without unpacking when transporting a shipping container. Intermodality allows faster loading and unloading in ports and effortless ground transport by train and truck.
Because less labor is needed to get the shipment to its destination, container shipping offers cost reductions. Freight container shipping grants more flexibility.
There are two types of freight shipping: Full Container Load (FCL) shipping and Partial Container Load (PCL) shipping. PCL shipping, sometimes called Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight shipping, works by strategically combining client shipments into a single container to facilitate delivery while reducing shipping costs.
