What is over-dimensional shipping? What makes over-dimensional shipping different from any other heavy equipment shipment? Strictly speaking, over-dimensional freight is any cargo that exceeds the size restrictions for a given area. Size restrictions can, and do, vary across regions. However, over-dimensional cargo will usually measure more than 53’ long, 8.5’ wide, or 13.6’ tall, including the trailer height. In some cases, a transport load is considered over-dimensional if it extends beyond the edges of the cargo bed. Over-dimensional cargo transport demands more than other heavy equipment shipping. Specialized permits are needed, and transporting over-dimensional freight includes additional considerations while planning the route, during the loading and unloading processes, and throughout the transport. Some jurisdictions restrict the times of day over-dimensional loads are allowed to travel. Over-dimensional cargo transport crews may be required to park in the evenings or on weekends, and cities may restrict travel with over-dimensional loads during peak traffic times. Heavy trucks, and other wheeled power machines, may be driven directly onto the lowered bed of an RGN trailer, raised into travel position by hydraulics, and delivered by a single skilled driver, but over-dimensional freight demands more. The loading and unloading processes might require a crane, which means multi-person crews.
